 Coconut remains to be one of the Philippines' most important agricultural commodity.
The Philippines has remained the world's largest coconut oil exporter, supplying
sixty-five (65%) of the world's requirement for coconut oil. It is estimated that the
Philippines has about 200 producers of virgin coconut oil (not including copra oil
producers). Coconut is considered as one of the top ten most important vegetable oil
crop in the world. The Philippines also supplies close to 40 percent (40%) of the world
requirement for desiccated coconut. For the past five (5) years the Philippines is also
the world leader in the production of copra. The Philippines also exports close to 47
percent (47%) of the world requirement for copra meal. For the past several years the
Philippines also supplies about 39 percent (39%) of the world requirement for activated
carbon from coconut as well as supplies more than 60 percent (60%) of the world
requirement for coconut shell charcoal. The Philippines also boasts of the first and
largest coconut biodiesel plant in Asia and in the world.
