Sixty-eight (68) out of the seventy-nine (79) provinces in the Philippines are classified
as coconut areas with work force of 3.5 million coconut farmers. Some 18 to 20 million
more Filipinos depend on the coconut industry by by-products for their livelihood.
The coconut industry is among the Philippines' top five net foreign exchange earners
and continues to be a strong pillar of the economy, generating livelihood to about one
third of the population of 86 million people.
In order to maintain its lead as the largest coconut exporting country in the world,
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has set the development of an additional
1.35 to 2 million hectares of lands to coconuts. The government is aggresively pursuing
up to year 2010 said additional coconut land plantations.
